Emma Spenner

Malawi (95-97)

My name is Emma Spenner and I had the wonderful opportunity to serve in the Peace Corps in Malawi from 1995 – 1997. While in the Peace Corps, I worked with the Department of Parks and Wildlife as an Environmental Educator. My educational background in International Environmental Studies (earned in 1995 from Colby College in Maine), served as a perfect springboard for my work in international environmental issues. While in Malawi, I had the opportunity to work on inspiring projects such as: creating a wildlife library at the Mzuzu Environmental Center; writing an environmental education manual for primary and secondary teachers; starting a paper-making income generating activity, and escorting numerous school groups into protected areas. After a rewarding two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I moved to Naples, Florida, where I worked as a Land Acquisition Specialist for The Conservancy of southwest Florida. After two years of buying swamp-land in Florida, I was called to where the mountains and sea meet. I moved to Bellingham, WA in 1999 to earn my Masters of Science Degree in Geography and Natural Resource Management. I recently completed my degree and am now working as the new Peace Corps Recruiter and as a part-time instructor at Western Washington University and Northwest Indian College.
